I watched Sherlock Holmes and the Time Portal as well as Sweeney Todd, and gem surprised me with tickets to see Patton Oswalt. I took a bunch of friends to the Alpaca Hacienda for Anela’s birthday, and we got to see feed and pet alpacas and a llama! I went to a number of photoshoots with Anela, including this Fourth of July shoot that I really enjoyed, a fairy photoshoot, cherry blossoms, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall and train tracks in LA where I also got to shoot gem! I also went to the Huntington Beach Cherry Blossom Festival! Here I am with gem, Tory, Sean, and Nicole. The Holi Festival was a colorful blast of fun. I saw the Wet Silk art exhibit, met Jon Klassen at the LA Times Festival of Books, and watched an LA KISS Arena football game. I watched Anela dance a few times, including Shimmy Shakedown featuring her and Melissa. I saw Kristine’s first exhibit that she curated in LA – Firsts, Seconds and Thirds: African American Leaders in Los Angeles During the 1960s & 70s. I attended Devin and Lorena’s 30th wedding anniversary party that included a face-painted bar crawl and a 1920s speakeasy party. I saw Disneyland Paris and our hometown Disneyland’s Season of the Force. It was amazing, and I swear I’ll get to sorting photos and blogging eventually.
I saw Denmark, the UK (including England and Northern Ireland), the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, and Sweden. I traveled to Europe and saw eight countries with three of my closest friends, gem, Antonio, and Anela, and visited two great friends, Jessica and Andrew, who had recently moved to Paris. And yet I’ll be lucky if 2017 lives up to 2016. More personally, I was laid off from Toshiba in a huge reduction-in-force, and my roommate had to put our two dogs to sleep. There were a lot of celebrity deaths in 2016, and I was devastated by the presidential election. Like a game of Clue, several possible outcomes are plausible, but only the final conclusion screen reveals whether the right call was made. Since many deductions are based on very circumstantial evidence (a rope was tied with a sailor’s knot, so a sailor must have been present!), there’s rarely a proverbial smoking gun that clearly points toward any one suspect. The problem here is that each case has more than one possible conclusion - with only one being the “correct” one. Clues can be combined to make deductions, leading to the final deduction of the murderer’s identity. While it’s easy to find clues, making the right sense of them can be another matter.

It’s a bit limited, since there are no secret areas or unlockables to uncover – but on the bright side, because detective vision didn’t need to be activated unless I was prompted to do so I didn’t waste time hunting for hidden clues that weren’t there. Objects of interest are clearly marked by floating text boxes some may require activating Holmes’ detective vision (similar to Batman’s in the Arkham series) which uncovers secrets that would go unnoticed by lesser sleuths. Controlling Holmes from a third- or first-person perspective, discovering clues by searching crime scenes for evidence and questioning suspects is pretty easy and straightforward. No overarching mystery, no grand denouement. Holmes’ brother Mycroft, a British government official, shows up early on to foreshadow the concluding case, but otherwise the anthology just.ends. My one criticism about the structure of these cases is that they’re all standalone stories, with nothing really linking them together except for the involvement of Holmes and his trusty chronicler, Dr. And like a good winding mystery, the person who did it is rarely the one you suspect initially. Murder is afoot in each of the cases, but that doesn’t stop them from being diverse from a gruesome death by whaling harpoon to an Egyptian-style ritual killing, the plots had me riveted. Crimes and Punishments takes place over the course of six perplexing, well-written cases that give Holmes ample opportunities to do what Holmes does best: Snoop around crime scenes for clues, interrogate suspects, and talk down to just about everyone he meets.
